From Brian Biery, Photographer-

Dear Family and Friends,

It has been an extremely challenging year on many levels, so it is my hope that this message finds you and your loved ones safe and well.

A friend recently reminded me of the profound value that art brings forward during times of trouble.  And the amazing contributions that artists continue to make to inspire and enlighten as we struggle with seemingly endless existential challenges.

To that end, I would like to invite you to participate in two special upcoming opportunities to experience the amazing skill and creativity of artists in our community.

On Saturday, December 6, I will be presenting my photographs, greeting cards, magnets, post cards and calendars at the annual Christmas Tree Lane Winter Arts and Crafts Festival at the Altadena Library.  Sponsored by the Christmas Tree Lane Association, the festival will begin at 3:00 pm and continue until 9:00 pm.  So please stop by and enjoy the Tree Lighting Ceremony which will take place around 6:00 pm, musical performances by local musicians/choirs/bands, dozens of art booths, delicious food, and over 10,000 holiday lights.

As in past years, I will be sharing a booth with the multi-talented Steve Sneed and his partner Jason Hardin from the fantastic S Claz Productions on Woodbury Rd. They will have dynamite Dena t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, baseball caps, etc. in a variety of designs and styles.

Then on Sunday, December 7 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm I will be sharing my work at another fabulous Holiday Arts/Crafts Fair at Kolhatkar Studios with several amazing local artists, including: Sonali Kolhatkar (ceramics, crochet, jewelry, wood crafts, etc.), Cynthia Schaefer (blankets, scarves) and Jesse Wood (assemblage, paintings). (Please email me at brian@brianbiery.com for the exact address.)

In closing, it is important to remember those friends and neighbors who lost everything in the Eaton Fire this past January. Many of whom had just purchased my calendars, cards and photographs at these same events last year; all of which ended up as piles of cinder and ash due to the devastating inferno. In order to serve as a reminder of what was lost and to help Eaton Fire survivors to rebuild their lives, I gave them new calendars and cards. Whenever I asked if they would like a framed photo to replace one they lost, the response was always the same: "Maybe after my home is rebuilt. Right now I have no place to hang it."

For any of us who live in the Pasadena/Altadena/Sierra Madre community, our lives were turned upside down on the evening of January 7, 2025. We all have stories about that night and the subsequent days of fire, smoke and ash. However, the key point to remember is that some families are still dealing with the impacts of the fire nearly a year later. The path for many will continue to be extremely difficult, so I will continue to offer my support and assistance as they rebuild their lives.

"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams," states Willy Wonka to spoiled brat Veruca Salt after she complains about his lickable snozzberry wallpaper in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Wonka wisely points out that the antidote to tragedy is the imagination. Who but an artist or a child would dream up lickable wallpaper and then assign its taste as a snozzberry?

Please join me and my fellow artists at one of these wonderful events as we continue to find creative ways to make music and dream dreams even in the face of uncertainty.

Gratefully,

Brian Biery, Photographer
