- Randii Oliver, Shamanic Fine Artist- “Hi Tony, I'm stunned and I need to share!!!!!  I just found out that some of my early digital artwork is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, as part of a Digital Art collection that was gifted by art historian, Patric Prince. Patric is an old friend of mine whom I have lost touch with. She taught at Cal State LA, when I was a grad student there, and I was in several seminal digital art shows that she curated. I helped to run the Cyberspace Gallery in Los Angeles at it's inception in 1991, which she co-created with Michael Masucci.

I've been hidden away for so long!!!!!!! Never did I expect to have my artwork in a museum as part of the history of Computer Graphics! WOW!!!!!!!!!  I’m SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!  LOL!!!!!”

(And in a follow-up email…)

“Hi Tony, Attached is my digital image, ‘Mann’, which is one of the images included in the Victoria and Albert Museum permanent collection…   I also have the dates for the Hastings Branch Library show in Pasadena:”

- Robyn Young, Brand Strategy and Design Consultant- “Hey Tony, ICYMI, I’m breaking with tradition! Yep, I said it. I am using actual in-person meet-ups to keep in touch with peeps (Facebook be damned). Because I’m a rebel like that.

Why?

I’ve started a brand strategy studio, http://www.robynyoung.co/, and looking to get the word out with the people I value most; my personal network. To celebrate, I’m inviting you to meet me for coffee in person to play catch up!

For the next three weeks, I’m scheduling individual meet-ups with a all of my Los Angeles based contacts in person (or via conference call for anyone out of the area or unable to meet) to catch up on what you are up to and tell you about my business in the hopes that we can create some synergy. No obligations, no expectations, just a chance for some face time.

My Gift To You

To make this meet-up even sweeter for you, I’ll gift you a free day of co-working at this INCREDIBLE co-working space, https://www.industriousoffice.com/locations/losangeles/, just for taking the time to meet with me! You can either use it for yourself or offer it up to someone in need of a change of scenery.

I’m in! Let’s Chat!

Choose whichever works for you, a 20 minute phone call or a 45 minute meet-up at my office in DTLA!

(Editor’s note: The following Memorial article in honor of our dear colleague and friend Soren Petersen by Charley W. Bush, appeared in the Huffington Post, June 2.)

Soren Ingomar Petersen: One of the great design pioneers and mentors of our generation
In honor of Soren, this will be under 1000 words: short, joyful, and honest.
Soren, of course would have taken closer to 10,000 words. In Soren’s case all those words have been a testament to his generosity and joy in collaborating with people. I am now not just a better design researcher. Because of Soren I am kinder, more capable of experiencing joy, and have seen, first hand, what it takes to make a positive dent in the universe.
Soren accomplished more in his life than anyone thought he was capable of. As a dyslexic child in Denmark, he was told he was too “dumb” to go to school. His final position was as Dean of Academic Affairs at Niels Brock International, Denmark’s oldest and most recognized business school. I once asked him what positive changes he felt responsible for. I’ve done my best to remember what he said:
He first mentioned being on the team that created the first, non-military, Heads-Up-Displays [HUD] for race car drivers. In an effort to improve the safety of his team’s driver he laid the groundwork for what we call Augmented or Virtual Reality. Soren’ simply said, “I worked on the first Heads-Up-Display… That was so cool, I got to meet Ralf Schumacher!”
The second thing he said he was proud of was his work validating design’s impact on business. This is modest. Soren was to design what Steve Wozniak was to computers. After receiving a degree in both engineering and design, he spent over three decades researching design, (10 years working at BMW), and received a PhD from Stanford in Design Quantification. When Soren began his career, design was seen as a disposable service. While many people helped make it essential to business, very few could show how. By studying successful methods from design, engineering and business, Soren created an algorithm able to predict an entrepreneur’s chances of receiving initial funding that was accurate close to 80% of the time. Soren validated that design was a quantifiable science as well as an art form.
Soren and his wife, Marysia, began “Crowd-sourcing” long before the term was coined. In the days when computers were green type on black screens, he came across an automobile chat room and became fascinated with the way people shared things and collected feedback for a car company he was working for. One day after hours of waiting for someone to mention his company, he said he was about to give up when Marysia came in to let him know dinner was ready. After he explained what he was trying to do, she asked if she could add a comment. Marysia jumped on the computer and asked what people thought of his company. Then they went to eat. When he returned to the screen, hundreds of comments awaited. The car company wasn’t quite prepared to hear how much customers disliked their cars, but Soren pioneered part of what would eventually become CrowdSourcing

Velvette De Laney, Principal Designer & Owner l dewdropstudios- “Hi Tony, Here's my post-graduation blurb…Hi fellow Schmoozfesters! I hope you're all well.

I did it! I completed my Master of Fine Arts degree in Design Research and Development this month at OSU. I'm now working on getting Venture Capital funding to turn my thesis research into a tech start-up. The research was initially on developing a tool to help Graphic Designers become more environmentally sustainable in their practice. I then developed a Journey Map that articulates a path that Designers, Clients. Vendors, and other stakeholders can take to become more sustainable. Since graduating, I've refocused the tool to help environmental managers of larger companies manage print projects. Fingers crossed I'll have really good news to report the next time I attend a Schmoozfest! I'll be staying in town for a while (rent is cheap and Columbus isn't so bad - there are a lot of hairy hipsters, though!), but I hope one day to move back home. Meanwhile, someone please give both Tony and Paula a big hug for me!”

From SCBWI’s “Kite Tales” newsletter, Posted by Sarah Parker-Lee, Managing Co-Editor in Contests and Grants, Mentorship Contest:
Long-time SCBWI member Carmel O’Mara-Horwitz submitted this year’s winning proposal to mentor an illustrator in the art of building a portfolio for the children’s book market. The contest to pick her mentee from among our Associate and Full members begins January 3, 2017.
The six-month mentorship, which runs May 1–Oct. 30, 2017, will help the chosen illustrator to evaluate and improve the art in their portfolio and to create a couple new pieces as necessary. O’Mara-Horwitz will focus the mentee’s learning on the following:
    •    Understanding the difference between making fine art or a single drawing versus storytelling with character development for a picture book – and how to convey this understanding in a portfolio
    •    Discovering and understanding the audience for a successful picture book
    •    Understanding book construction, pacing, and layout and how to convey this in a portfolio
    •    Exploring the different platforms for storytelling such as pop-up book construction, apps and digital media

- Ann Song- “Hi Tony, Hope all is well! Agnes Carrera introduced us a while back and I was asking her if she happened to know of a talented videographer [with some experience] who might be interested in creating a 4 part pilot video series that I'm working on called "In Studio With..."

Each 10 minute video would be an in studio visit with an LA fashion designer. Aesthetically and visually and editing wise, I was thinking about something like the following examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilb42VdWFGQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn-S95icfbc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdMH9amLu2Q
I'm interested in finding someone who might be interested in doing this first series for credit [and to receive exposure on our websites and through social media promotion]...

The goal would be to eventually get sponsors and then continue to create more series...which I would then like to continue working with the videographer and work out a fee...

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you happen to know of anyone...?

All my best,

Ann

- Gail Howland, Photographer, Faculty, ArtCenter for Kids- (Editor’s Note: the following are excerpts from an ArtCenter College of Design’s “Storyboard” article:)

Dear Friends of ArtCenter,
When I told my colleagues that I was considering getting my second degree at ArtCenter College of Design, some of them couldn’t quite wrap their head around the concept. They were familiar with ArtCenter and were aware of its reputation of having a demanding standard along with an intense curriculum. I certainly don’t remember having as heavy a workload during my undergraduate tenure at Berkeley.

There’s a reason that students come from all over the country to attend classes here. And it's not just rigor for the sake of rigor alone – far from it. Rather, it is this simple fact: when you leave ArtCenter, you feel like you can do anything – because, in a way, you can. Looking back, like so many of my peers who eventually ended up at ArtCenter, the seeds for my life as a creative were planted early. I knew I wasn’t interested in science or math – it was performing and the world of visual arts that fascinated me. It took a while to figure out what I was good at. I began studying ballet at a young age and eventually majored in Art History, both passions that I continue to explore to this day. After graduation, I came to discover what would be my defining passion and creative preoccupation: photography. I began by taking images of artists on stage before eventually focusing my concentration on portraiture. The idea that this could be a viable career option hadn’t occurred to me yet – it was initially a creative endeavor that I simply felt compelled to participate in.

ArtCenter taught me there was a career in photography. The College also provided a sort of meeting ground where I could interact with like-minded individuals who shared my same creative priorities and preoccupations. Over the years, one of my greatest joys has been being connected with the amazing folks who make up our alumni population. To call myself lucky in this regard would be an understatement.

Currently, I’m faculty in the ArtCenter for Kids program where I have been teaching black-and-white photography to children ages 10-14. It’s an incredible process to witness these young students, many of whom are operating from a place of pure artistic creation. They’re not old enough yet to know what the world thinks of them or their art, and thus, that preconception doesn’t color the work itself. Proper schooling and the quote-unquote ‘way to do things’ take a backseat to imagination and outside-the-box thinking...

Ultimately, it takes a lot of non-creative work to be a creative. Taking an art class should be as essential as taking a math or science class because it teaches you how to build a perspective. Giving these young people the tool kit necessary to forge their own creative point of view is truly gratifying. That same sensation I experienced all those years ago – that feeling that I could do anything – is something I see blossoming in the minds of my students, day in and day out. I hope you will consider supporting ArtCenter so these young artists may continue developing their creative perspectives.

Yours truly,
Gail Howland

This past weekend I watched a video that we produced went viral on Facebook. In a little over three days it has reached almost 800,000 people, been watched by over 300,000 people and shared 4,400 times! The audience response is still growing.

Our short video, about female helicopter pilot Captain Natalie Jones is currently the only commercial female helicopter captain in the world. This video is part of a series about women who are working in typically male professions. It was solicited by “Vertical Magazine” where it has gained significant traction and has greatly expanded the reach and message of our series “Breaking Barriers Like a Woman.”

- Pete Van Law, Producer, Documentary Filmmaker- What will the Natzler’s Treasures Reveal?

“I thought I’d exhausted the subject of the Natzlers and moved on to stories of my other relatives’ along with personal stories from a number of our readers.
But then a few a few months ago I got a cryptic email from a stranger named David D. In it he said that he had inherited some of Marlies Natzler’s photos, letters and more, all stored in a garage in West Los Angeles. He asked if I would be interested in seeing them. “Yes, of course”, I said, with a level of growing enthusiasm. Ever since I rediscovered Marlies Natzler, I found more questions about her family’s history than I found answers. So, I jumped at the opportunity.”
