- SchmoozeFest, Summer 2009- Our SchmoozeFest last week was a success because of the great gathering of talented people who attended and showed their incredible array of artwork. We were able to see some outstanding examples of photography, graphic arts, illustration, and hear some remarkable stories of creative evolution.
The "prize" for the person who came the furthest goes to Photographer Robert Tran who lives in Hong Kong, was visiting in Salt Lake City, Utah, and drove down to Las Vegas and then to our event at the urging of Tyvan Pulis, Photographer. Tyvan also came a long distance as he drove down from the Bay Area to show his richly lit photographs and mingle with our fellow artists. We were going to try to hook up via Skype with Graphic Artist and Humanitarian, Parisa Ashrafi in Iran but we had some technical difficulties. I have since heard from Parisa and she sends her hellos and thanks for your good wishes.
Those in attendance included Bonnie Blake, Jan Yamamoto, Maureen Erbe, Karen Jossel, Velvette Delaney, Veronica Delaney, Sharin Raban, Harriet Kaiser, Todd Johnson, Shiho Nakaza, Robin Neudorfer, Amy Fierstein, Jen Calbi, Joe Calbii, Michael Stern, Andrea Best, and Paula Luna.
Among the topics that were discussed were:
- Dan Poirer is continuing to develop the organization for his new experimental theatre group, "Grand La La." He is looking for volunteers to help him with all aspects of his exciting experimental theatre group which plans to perform all over the greater Los Angeles area. You can contact Dan at dan@danpoirier.com
- Justin Bastien is currently in Chamonix, France photographing and videotping an ultra marathon around the base of Mont Blanc.
- Dean Siracusa is going to be flying his plane to Burning Man and taking some aerial photos of the event.
- Christine Caldwell had a showing of her beautiful photocompositions of flowers and insects at Art at the Braley in Pasadena's Old Town. Her show ended last week but I will be happy to let you know when her next exhibition occurs.
- Alena St. James continues creating her unique designs and licensing them. She just keeps inspiring us all with her artistry.
- Simone Drucker is pursuing her career as an Artist and freelance designer. She has a new blog and will be going to Burning Man next week where she will be working on a lighted dome made entirely of plastic water bottles.
- Rita Chen is looking for a desgner to help with an invitation and program book for the Organization of Chinese Americans annual fund raising event to be held in October. If you are interested in this pro-bono opportunity you may contact her at rswc14@gmail.com
We hope to see you at the next SchmoozeFest which is tentatively set for Thursday, December 17 at 7:00 PM.

And tomorrow the five Art Center students who left for an eight day research field trip to Guatemala will be returning, and I am sure they will be full of stories and concepts for projects to help the Mayan people in the villages they visited. In September the students will form into groups in Caltech's class "Design for Developing Communities" under the leadership of Dr. Ken Pickar to create those products and learn the basics of entrepreneuism. More on this later.

TLC Update- 07-15-09
Dear Friends of Tony Luna Creative:
Well I am back from a little time off to relax the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. It's always an amazement to me how important it is to have a break in the action and to spend some time seeing new things and sharing time with friends. The creative spirit needs a break in order to shake things up which sometimes lead to new visions and opportunities.
But, eventhough I was away I continued to receive news from those of you who have participated in the classes, workshops and consultations so I am here to pass that news on so you can keep up with your colleagues and be inspired by their work.
By the way the ninth in a series of articles I have written for Photo.net went online today and you can take a look at it by clicking on http://photo.net/learn/photography-business/freelance-photography-advice/billing/. The article also features the photography of John Anderson, a retired Lutheran minister who has had a passion for photography for over thirty years and is now creating amazing photographic deconstructions and assembleges from existing art. You will be impressed by the evocative clarity of spirit he is able to convey in his artwork. You can see more examples of his exciting work at http://imagesaccordingtojohn.com/.

-Parisa Ashrafi- On June 26 I had a Skype telecommunication with our good friend Parisa Ashrafi. At that time she was in her room at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland where she is studying expressive arts therapy and social issues. She wanted me to convey that "Everyone has been supportive and kind" in your emails to her and she very much appreciated your words of encouragement
Then on July 14 I received an email from her in which she passed along that she is now back at her family home in Behshahr, Iran. She is helping her parents and courageously dealing with the situations at hand. She concluded her message by saying, "Please let my friends know I’m doing well and say hi. :-)." I told her about environmental portraiture and she was very excited to learn that she could combine her two passions. Thanks to you for the idea on how to discover their passions."
"Their other assignment is to interview successful photographers. They've given me the names of their nominees and why they chose them. It would be interesting to put together the lessons we are taking up, the stories that I am sharing with them, and the interviews with other photographers, their portfolios - maybe we can produce a book at the end of the term." -Jasmin Kuhn- Filmmaker/Photographer Jasmin Kuhn has a provocative web site that she directed me to, http:.//www.jasminkuhn.com.
Jasmin was in a class I taught at Art Center and it was especially exciting for me to read that, "I have been good, we are finally finished with the feature film I shot in the Philippines last year. The production ended up hiring me to do visual effects co-ordination between the US, Canada and the Philippines. It really was great, I got to work directly with E FILM. During the time we also did our D.I., Sound Design, ADR, and Mix. It's been really a blessing to be having had hands on experience on a motion picture." And, "I also recently got signed to a production house in NYC for US Presentation. 'Kipany Pictures', it will be announced in 'Shoot Magazine' by the Fall." Great work Jasmin!

-Diana Mulvihill- Photographer. Diana has just completed her important project photographically documenting the humanitarian work of Operation Smile in India. And now she is preparing to accompany our Art Center and Caltech students and faculty to document the work of our students as they visit Mayan villages in Guatemala for eight days in August. Our student teams will be collaborating with students from Universidad Rafael Landivar as part of a Caltech class titled, "Design for Developing Communities" headed by Dr. Ken Pickar. They will be learning about the social and humanitarian needs of the Mayan people and addressing such topics as water purification, sanitation, irrigation, and micro-economics among others. The Art Center contingent is being assisted through the generous participation of Designmatters, an Art Center educational initiative to bring real world issues into the Art Center curriculum. If you want more information about Designmatters, or the Art Center/Caltech collaboration please contact me.

From Americans for the Arts/Art Advocacy Alert
Great news!
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $15 million increase for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for FY 2010. Currently funded at $155 million, this increase would bring both agencies' budgets to $170 million. Please take two minutes to write to your Senators and urge them to support this important funding increase!
Next Steps:
We must now put pressure on the Senate to match the funding level set in the House of Representatives. Please take time to visit Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center to send a letter to your Senators. http://capwiz.com/artsusa/issues/alert/?alertid=13627991

"As some of you may already know, after an international search, I was asked to become the next Dean of the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Sharjah. Sharjah is the emirate next to (north of) Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)." Further he wrote, "As well as wanting to share this news with you, I wanted to ask for your assistance and interest. The need to immediately hire a new Shop/Lab Instructor and at least one studio faculty member has just surfaced, and your help in these searches would be very appreciated. I think that many of you are an excellent resource and network for such positions. If you know of anyone (or if you may be interested) who might fit the positions please contact me directly." - Robin Neudorfer- Robin was juried into an exhibition with Pasadena Society of Artists. It was for the Aids Service Center Big Night Out fundraiser. Additionally she completed a commission that also was a donation, to the National Charity League. And she was juried (by Sam Mellon), into an exhibition called, The Art of Giving and Receiving, hosted by the Aids Service Center. This will run from May 30 - June 26. The artist reception was May 30th from 3 - 6 pm. Robin an Award of Merit for, "Under the Shadow of an Oak"
Last month she began private art lessons in her studio. She wrote, "I can create a program that suits the individual. I have had inquiries for the summer months, and others for the fall. Interesting that it interests adults wanting to rediscover their creativity. Sounds like a familiar theme." You can contact Robin at rneudorfer@mac.com
- Mark Alberhasky- Mark wrote: "My website writings and e-interactions with photographers seem to be garnering some attention. Nikon asked me to be one of their Pro moderators for the Nikon Digital Learning Center on Flickr, and the Mentor Series has me doing a live chat to promote upcoming treks and the series June 22. Also just taped a podcast for the Imaging Insider website comparing high end compacts from Nikon and Leica.
I have several days of personal shooting coming up in Death Valley next month, a trek in Montreal in Aug, and Egypt in Sept/Oct." Mark can be reached at fotodoc@gmail.com
- Peter Treadway- Peter let us know that his company, JP Works, "...won an award recently from the Northwest IDSA Design Invitational for our invention and development of the Treadway wearable mobility device." He went on to say, "In short, Treadways are click-in motorized shoes. They are wearable, rechargeable, motorized shoe attachments designed to traverse the 'last mile'. You just click in and out of them- or wear them all day. They make it easier to make short distance trips to local retail outlets, to get to a nearby train station, from the bus to work; to anywhere that used to be either a short drive or a [too] long walk. You can wear Treadways while driving a car, so you don’t have to choose either/or. They are designed to be flexible so they can be worn with most other forms of transportation. Whenever they are not in use, you just use them as you would shoes. At 3 lbs each, they are as light as an article of clothing. They have a 10 mile range, can travel at 10+ mph and are controlled by a wireless, handheld remote. Lightweight Lithium Ion Nanophosphate batteries are charged through a wall outlet at home, work, or the coffee shop." You can find out more about Treadways at www.thejpworks.com and p.treadway@thejpworks.com

- Wendee Lee (wendeedesign@yahoo.com) forwarded the following message from Maureen Thurston who has been in Australia since she left our class two years ago. "G’day mates!...I wanted to say HI! How are you? And what are you doing next Sunday? As you know I’ve been hanging in Sydney for the last couple of years but as it turns out I’ll be flying back into LA next weekend for a quick visit and thought it would be fun to connect if you can fit me into your schedule. I thought I’d park myself at Marisol restaurant (end of Santa Monica pier) because the 'Pier' would be an amusing touristy thing to do, their bar looks out over the ocean and I haven’t had any Mexican food in over 2 years (can’t find it here in Australia). I thought I’d get there around 3, Sunday June 14 and just hang out... I think there’ll be a few folks there, - If you can join me that would be terrific – it would be so cool to see you! And I’m not sure when I’ll be back in LA – probably not for awhile. Hope you can stop by! -Maureen." So if you can it would be great if you could attend and let her know how much we miss her. -mthurston@designleverage.com
- Jillian Suzanne wrote, "I have one to add =) Just started working on Vol. 2 of the children's book. The first volume sold over 10,000 units the first 2 months it was out. That success resulted in the partners excitement and 2 weeks ago gave the green light for the second book due out for Christmas. I just started getting story breakdowns at the end of last week and am back to the drawing board literally!" Jillian can be contacted at
